In partnership with the Western Growers Foundation, we were pleased to participate in the celebration of the sustainability and academic success of the Chico Country Day School garden:
"Chico Country Day School planted its garden in 1996, and has managed it well on a limited budget. In 2009, WGF provided a $1,500 school garden grant, garden supplies and teacher resources to help sustain the outdoor classroom. Today, the garden is thriving and provides opportunities for teachers to present science, physical education, language arts, social studies, math and nutrition education for all grade levels (K-8)." ~ Western Grower & Shipper Magazine, June 2010
In addition to the staff of Western Growers, we were joined by representatives from Congressman Wally Herger's (R-Chico) and California Assemblyman Dan Logue's (R-Chico) staff for this impromptu presentation. Our own staff gave a brief lesson on farming and introduced the students to the joys of eating healthy, locally grown fruit:
"Butte County is a wonderful place to farm, and I hope these students will learn to appreciate how vital this county's family farmers are to the community, state and the nation." ~ Desta Bechtol
We are so fortunate to work with such great local farmers! One of our growers, Sally Weed, was recently interviewed by the Western Chestnut Growers Association (WCGA), and we can't help but toot her horn! Check out the article here! Nice job, Sally!
